Why Won't Health Authorities Listen to Rural Healthcare Providers? 💡

Clearing a New Path™ and Clearing a New Path Podcast™ are products of Radar Media, located in Dorchester, Ontario on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and Neutral peoples who once used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.  As a settler here I’m committed to deepening understanding of Indigenous communities and reframing responsibilities to land and community. I am grateful to Mother Earth for the opportunity for love and connection and to the spirits of the Elders and the Medicine People who still walk the Earth.

GRANDVIEW HEALTHCARE SOLUTIONS, GRANDVIEW, MANITOBA

Hello Amazing Humans,

This week's episode is another in a series about rural health care and the challenges face in different rural and remote communities across Canada. This episode includes some of the solutions a community, grassroots organization is trying to come up with and the disconnect between government authorities and the boots-on-the-ground health care professionals trying to work within a fragmented, maladjusted system.Grandview Healthcare Solutions started back in 2017, a community-driven advocacy to keep the EMS Station open in Grandview, Manitoba, one of 17 planned closures across the province.

You'll hear from Sue Stirling, from Grandview Healthcare Solutions and from Dr. Jacobi Elliott, currently the only physician serving the area.

Sue was born in England and came to Canada in 1982. She worked primarily with domestic violence and child sexual assault victims. When she retired, she returned to Grandview. She has been involved with Grandview Healthcare Solutions, since 2017.

Dr. Jacobi Elliott grew up in South-Africa. Her mom was a nurse and her dad a wine farmer. She has 2 sisters - and they are both also physicians. All she ever wanted was to work in the hospital - she says she loves the smell of the place. She has a diploma in anesthesia, and a special certification in emergency medicine.

Dr. Elliott is the current President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba and she wrote a compelling message to college members about her experience this year and I’ll leave a link to it here.

In 2017, the group commissioned a community research project on the implications of emergency healthcare cuts within their community. Researchers from McMaster University, with roots in rural Manitoba and Ontario, undertook this study, analyzing government reports and policies, and interviewing community members. The project report is called, 'Keeping Rural Health Care Close to Home'
