The only news you'll need this week 🎯

Clearing a New Pathâ„¢ and Clearing a New Path Podcastâ„¢ are products of Radar Media, located in Dorchester, Ontario on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and Neutral peoples who once used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.  As a settler here I’m committed to deepening understanding of Indigenous communities and reframing responsibilities to land and community. I am grateful to Mother Earth for the opportunity for love and connection and to the spirits of the Elders and the Medicine People who still walk the Earth.

On my mind this week:

1. Equal Futures Summit

Me addressing the group

A casual dinner hosted by the Canadian Women's Chamber of Commerce

Myself and Joanna Griffiths from Knix

Being allowed the great privilege and opportunity to speak about the stories many of you have told me about your experience in your rural communities and then subsequent conversations my colleague and I had with other folks at the conference, there is still somewhat of a disconnect between urban folks and an understanding of what's happening in many rural communities in Canada. I'm planning to write about it more and if you have input you'd like to offer, please do!

2. National Indigenous Peoples Day - June 21

Indigenous people were Canada's first people. We stole this land from them, therefore, those of us who are not Indigenous are all settlers here.Have you ever prepared a land acknowledgement? Here's a resource to get started.

3. Emancipation Day in Canada - August 1

4. Municipal Elections

Our election turnout here in Ontario for our provincial election was abysmal and although it is a great privilege to vote, I can't say as I blame folks when we are still working within a governmental system that is only designed to serve white men. That being said, many municipal elections will be held across Canada in the coming months (BC, Ontario, Manitoba and PEI).The Federation of Canada Municipalities (FCM) has a division called Canadian Women in Local Leadership. If you have started a grassroots organization or are planning to run, I'd sign up for their newsletter to see how they can help!

5. Gender-based violence in rural Ontario
