Rural and Remote Women in Politics🔥

Clearing a New Pathâ„¢ and Clearing a New Path Podcastâ„¢ are products of Radar Media, located in Dorchester, Ontario on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and Neutral peoples who once used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.  As a settler here I’m committed to deepening understanding of Indigenous communities and reframing responsibilities to land and community. I am grateful to Mother Earth for the opportunity for love and connection and to the spirits of the Elders and the Medicine People who still walk the Earth.

WOMEN IN RURAL POLITICS

Hello Amazing Humans,I had the pleasure of speaking with these two women, separately for this episode. Shari Graydon, the creator and head of Informed Opinions, talked about a recent Abacus Data study that Informed Opinions commissioned on how Canadians feel about Canada moving from 27th to 60th in the world, when it comes to equal representation. In response, they've started a national campaign called Balance of Power, encouraging folks to call on political parties and sitting representatives to implement and enforce diversity quotas. The Mayor of Peterborough, Ontario, Diane Therrien has served as both a councillor and mayor on municipal council, but she's not running in this year's race. Hear her experience, her attitude towards trolls and her thoughts on who should be making decisions in the future.

NEWS THIS WEEK

“It’s not in keeping with the values of this community..." and went on to refer to 2SLGBTQA+ folks as living a "lifestyle". Councillor Patrick Merlihan, running for mayor in the election this month, made a motion at a later meeting that all council members should receive diversity, equity and inclusion training. It wasn't supported. What our Cathy found most troubling was some of the hate-filled comments on social media.

Is there something similar happening in your community? DROP ME A LINE and let me know. I'd like to have a few folks on for an episode.

FROM READERS

thinks better regulations need to be in place around development....meaning large species like bear and wolf and cougar and moose elk and deer need to have ancient used wildlife corridors preserved by municipalities, maybe more Conservation officers too.I found this very interesting and would love to know more!Margaret shared she's thinking about (I LOVE all of these BTW!):

  • Scarcity mentality that we see everywhere.  I’m not sure this is completely mind over matter as our economies value scale so much and scale doesn’t work in a small group.

  • How to support people’s visions.

  • Health and well being (mentally and physically) while also recognizing seasonal agricultural work.

  • How to stay healthy when you’re stressed about getting a crop off or whether it will rain.

  • How to help other people who won’t recognize they are suffering.

  • Recognizing natural and social wealth as clearly as economic wealth.

OPEN SUNDAY CIRCLE ON THANKSGIVING? YEP!

I'm going to host another open Zoom circle this Sunday. I realize many of you may be with family and friends for Thanksgiving, but is there a better time to talk about issues?Bring the topics you'd like to discuss with other rural folks across Canada. I again will likely record it, but feel free to turn off your video as you wish, I will only be keeping the audio. The key here is RESPECTFUL conversations, with deep listening, care and understanding, holding space for others.
